On May 6, 2023, McClendon was fatally struck by a vehicle in Greenwood, South Carolina, initially believed to be a hit-and-run incident. Subsequent investigations revealed that William "Bud" Ackerman Jr., the estranged husband of McClendon's girlfriend, Meredith Haynie, was responsible for the deliberate act. Evidence presented during the trial included surveillance footage, phone records, and forensic findings, leading to Ackerman's conviction for murder.
